I think I get it; let me try to explain. So what he's saying is Bitcoin is essentially just a virtual form of currency that isn't regulated by banks or the government. However, the currency caps at 21million bitcoins. Which means that there can only be 21million bitcoins at any given time. Kinda like a pool of money, there is only 21 million dollars, no more, no less. I guess this would help with keeping the value of bitcoins consistent. Bitcoins are «mined» by solving complex mathematical equations. 12 million bitcoins have been recovered because 12 million complex mathematical equations have been solved, and after each one is solved, 1 bitcoin is released. So the number of equations that cap are 21 million.

But I'm questioning the actual value of bitcoins. Originally, the dollar was used as a placeholder (or substitute) for a quantity of precious minerals. Such as gold. What does bitcoin hold value of?

I'm guessing to «mine» cryptocurrency is to get rewarded for keeping the cryptocurrency trade functioning over the internet based on how many transactions your machine is able to process. The mathematical problems being solved are probably the algorithms to decrypt/encrypt back and forth the «crypto»-currency.
