The steam pressure sounds like it is too high (greater than 1 psi) and there is not enough venting on the steam mains.

I live in a condo building so can I do both repairs you did without having to shut off the main line? I have 2 other units in my building so it will make the repair more challenging if I have to have the HOA involved.

My radiators are LOUD banging all night. I understand all of the steps, but they don't make the purge key for the (female) nipple on top of my antique radiator anymore. It looks like it accepts a recessed Allen key… not the usual butterfly key.

Where did you get that giant roll of graphite packing? I can only find small lengths at HD/Lowes.
